“Blue” by Laye

Montreal-based artist laye gives listeners a peek into her mind with “blue.” This song is an emotive expression of the fear of losing a lover. We had the pleasure of interviewing laye, and here’s what she had to say:

Q: What inspired the visualizer? I noticed it’s one scene on loop.

LAYE: At some point, I’d love to be able to create full music videos for each song I release but that’s not where I’m at right now. So in the meantime, we have this lil visualizer! And it will sort of begin to explain itself as the rest of my music comes out.

Q: Cool, I look forward to that! I like how well-written “Blue” is! How did you get the idea/inspiration to create this lovely song?

LAYE: Thank you! I always find myself writing about loneliness and the word “Blue” really embodies that for me. Although it comes off as a breakup song, I actually wrote this song while being in a long-term relationship, thinking about losing the person I was with at the time. Based on habits I was aware of but hadn’t yet been able to change. I wrote this song out of fear of loss, out of love. I think I unintentionally manifested my breakup…

Q: Ouch. What role do you think music played in the early years of your life?

LAYE: Music was always a safe place for me. An escape and a release.

Q: Did you always know you would become a musician? At what point did you reach this realization/conclusion?

LAYE: No, I don’t think I did. I knew I liked singing, and I knew I liked writing. I guess it was a hobby turned profession, that sort of happened organically with time

Q: How do you balance your music career with your social life/other obligations?

LAYE: It’s a tough thing because you’re in charge of your own schedule, in the early stages of it all. And I just sort of feel like I’m not always doing enough or that there’s always more work to be done. So I think to answer your question, I haven’t really found a balance between my music career and my social life, and I think I’ll always be figuring it out.

Q: If you could only listen to one album for the rest of the year, what would you choose?

LAYE: King Princess’ album ‘Hold on Baby’ recently helped me through a little rough patch so I think that would be one I would choose to listen to for the rest of the year (and longer!). It’s the perfect amount of sad but warm? So ya, I’ll go with that.
