Ever felt this indescribable need to be around someone you know isn’t a good influence on you? Someone you always find yourself getting into trouble with but can’t stay away from? Australian singer-songwriter and producer BOBI ANDONOV has captured this intense and thrilling feeling in his latest release, “Bad Decisions.” We had the pleasure of interviewing BOBI ANDONOV, and here’s what he had to say:
Q: What was the inspiration for “Bad Decisions”?
ANDONOV: You know those moments when you’re completely lost in someone else? Those nights when you’re with someone and you know they’re not the best company, but you can’t help but be drawn to the excitement and thrill of it all? That’s exactly what inspired my song “Bad Decisions.” It’s all about those irresistible moments when you’re caught up in the company you want to keep, even if it’s not always the best choice.
Q: At what point did you decide that you wanted to be a musician? How did your family react to this?
ANDONOV: When I was about nine years old, my family and I took a trip to Macedonia, the birthplace of our roots. As we were exploring our ancestral home, I found a dusty old vinyl record player in the upstairs attic. I couldn’t resist the urge to play it, and as I did, I found myself singing along to the classic tunes of my dad’s youth. My parents were quick to rush up the stairs and catch me in the act, but from that moment on, I couldn’t stop singing. It was as if I had discovered a new part of myself that I never knew existed, and I’ve been pursuing my passion for music ever since.
Q: In what way(s), do you think your style has evolved since the beginning of your career?
ANDONOV: Well, when I first started out in my career, I was still trying to figure out who I was as an artist and what kind of music I wanted to make. I think I was a bit more influenced by the styles of the moment, and maybe didn’t have as clear of a sense of my own unique voice and sound. But over time, I’ve been able to experiment more with different genres and sounds, and really hone in on what feels authentic to me as an artist. I think my lyrics have also become more personal and meaningful, as I’ve gone through different experiences in my life that have shaped me as a person and a musician. And of course, as I continue to evolve and grow, I’m excited to see where my style will take me in the future.
Q: What do you enjoy most about being a musician? And what do you think is a downside of this career?
ANDONOV: I think being able to create something out of nothing is one of the most special feelings and I feel very lucky to be able to do this every day. I mean a downside would be, the competitive nature of the industry can make it challenging to stand out and build a sustainable career. Musicians may also face long periods of travel and time away from loved ones, which can be emotionally and physically taxing.
Q: What do you do to get your creative juices flowing when you feel stuck while creating a song?
ANDONOV: When I feel stuck and uninspired, I honestly will either relax, put on a film I love or leave the house and go out for a drink with my mates or maybe even meet someone just to be in a different environment.
Q: What message do you have for your fans?
ANDONOV: Their support over the years hasn’t been unnoticed. I am constantly inspired by their enthusiasm and passion for my music and I’m so excited to share all this new music coming in 2023.
