“Aries” – Brandon Lott

“Aries” by Brandon Lott is simply decadent. The bass line is unforgettable. The vocals are sumptuous. The lyrics are intriguing, if not completely tantalizing. Falling somewhere between Bruno Mars, Omar Apollo, Steve Lacy, and Anderson .Paak, this track truly harnesses the effortless coolness of Neo-Soul while also keeping some catchy pop sensibilities. If you’re not totally mesmerized by the end of it, then you’re likely (at least) adding it to your spring or summer playlist.

A classic combo of bass and drums sets us off. The bass performs a shapely riff, riddled with deep distortion as the drums hold a steady, simple groove. The vocals pour in: “Loving should feel like sunshine / Lighting up in your soul / Dance with me in the moonlight / You got me feeling bold.” Brandon’s voice is smooth, gracing each word with a conversational, casual tone. The pre-chorus introduces a funky guitar and a few tasteful background vocals. The melody becomes slightly more repetitive, but the full climax has yet to arrive.

In comes the chorus–layers of doubles and octaves grace the lead melody while synths pulse in the background. Both Brandon’s vocal power and the melody’s infectiousness reach their full potential here. It’s the kind of chorus that makes you want close your eyes and move along to the beat. In fact, that’s what it’s for. Brandon Lott has crafted a song so organically groovy, it’s impossible not to feel it in your bones.

Be sure to give “Aries” a stream, and Brandon Lott a follow! You’ll be glad you did!
