“Alive” – Hitman Productions

“Alive” by Hitman Productions is an electro-pop anthem. Complete with a funky drum groove, a variety of diverse textures, and a seriously impressive vocal performance, it practically manifests attention. Whether you’re dancing along or simply basking in its infectious goodness, you’ll be absorbed. Not to mention, its distinctive implementation of 70s influences makes it unlike any modern pop track you’ll hear. So, let’s delve into what makes it so great.

A few delay-doused synth chords and a peppering of piano twinkles invite us into the song. A producer tag signals the beginning of the verse, which explodes with a cloud of harmonies, locked-in drums, and melodic bass. The groove is so viscerally palpable, you can feel it in your bones. On top of that, the vocals weave in and out of each other, some in unison, some in tight harmony, and some performing their own distinct melodies. While busy, this atmosphere is so organically good it feels intuitive and accessible. As the momentum continues, more textures pile in, but the groove remains tight.

We are gifted a small departure from the percussion in the middle, as drums drop to nothing but tambourine as the vocalist delivers these ad-libbed, ethereal runs. This rhythmic pause makes it all the more satisfying when the drums eventually return. It’s a technique electronic producers use often, always to the same gloriously poignant effect. Here, Hitman Productions keeps us on our toes with not only this but every small decision. This song is special amongst electronic pop in many ways, but also indicative of a genre that is, in itself, creative and powerful. So, be sure to give “Alive” a listen! You’ll be glad you did.
