“Airhead” by Honey Revenge is a pop-rock masterpiece. Complete with genre-defining, powerful vocals and a host of catchy melodies, this song truly brings the right energy. If you ever find yourself longing for a modern iteration of that angsty rock music from your childhood, you’re in luck. Honey Revenge does a great job of referencing that genre but also keeping the sound fresh.
A rhythmic grouping of distorted guitar chords sets it off. “Damn I’m such an airhead, no strength in my spine / With the best intention, I can’t make it right,” the singer suddenly pierces through the mix. Her high-pitched belts balance the now booming instrumentation, a perfect pairing rife with groove, passion, and momentum. This anthemic chorus soon dissolves into a verse, which utilizes a cleaner yet more rhythmically active guitar sound. Brightening up the instrumentation makes some room for the now deeper vocal. It’s the perfect dynamic change, and it seamlessly prepares us for another climactic chorus.
Fast forward to the crispest, most melodic guitar solo you’ll ever hear—with layers of octaves and doubles, this instrumental mimics some good-old pop-punk tropes while also sprinkling in a fair amount of experimental sound design and genuinely original melody writing. By now, if you’re not in love with this song, you’re doing it wrong.
Be sure to give Honey Revenge a listen and a follow! Their sound is infectious, familiar, and endlessly creative. Plus, you might just get a new favorite song out of it.
