“Up From The Shadows” – Chris Kage x Joe Jury

“Up From The Shadows” by Chris Kage x Joe Jury first starts out very light and dreamy vocally, which is opposing its very deep, intricate, and emotionally heavy lyrics. “Up From The Shadows” echos how difficult the quest for identity is amid the turmoil of life coming at you in all directions. Kage’s haunting lyrics mixed with his light vocals gently helps unfold a narrative of breaking free and facing the challenge of self-reinvention, which can be a hard pill to swallow if everything is going to hell. He consistently references rain, which can be interpreted as a poignant symbol for cleansing the previous emotions that a person could’ve once grappled with. “Up From The Shadows” captures the struggle against the metaphorical “shadows;” mourning the loss of your sense of self and everything around you not working correctly, but still facing the darkness so that you can eventually rise to the light. Kage and Jury created a very intimately sounding song so that it will be easier for us listeners to confront our own complicated maze of identity, and to discover the beauty in confronting one’s shadows without fear.
