Get lost in a world of stories with Hot Spoon, Cold Mango and his record Paws on Ears available everywhere now. The band name itself came from a grocery trip where he purchased a mango sherbet and had no spoons except for the ones straight from the dishwasher. The unique name encompasses the unique style that Hot Spoon, Cold Mango has.
When talking about finding inspiration he shares, “My primary wellspring of inspiration derives from the raw essence of existence itself. Within this existence, I’m immersed in a profound sensation that saturates the world around me, an intensity I harness to craft an auditory tapestry.”
The genre that the band penned for their sound is Motion Vision, or easy listening for weary space travelers, either way their goal is to take the listener on a journey through the fabric of existence. Sharing stories in a harmonious united vision.
Instrumental music like this is pure poetry. Instead of dissecting lyrics, the listener gets to dissect sounds and how they make them feel – which can be even more personal than words. The record opens up with a track titled “A Beckoning Plea of A Call For Bears,” and it starts softly with drums and continues to build into piano and trumpet. The title and the album cover have an outdoor feeling and the release in November gives it a crispy fall feeling. The slowness of it is peaceful and serene.
One that stood out was “Sketching In A Photogram of Worlds,” it puts the listener in a trace and could be listened to all day long. Hot Spoon, Cold Mango is a classically trained pianist so the beautiful piano melodies throughout should not be a surprise. They are jazzy and calming in all the right ways.
The final track “Zoologist Leaves For The Evening” sets up the ending of the album very nicely. Since many of the tracks weave in the mention of wildlife, we were simply observing. The saxophone and trumpet play a little bit of a somber melody, but the bass keeps it somewhat upbeat. A good balance of bittersweet for leaving but grateful for having the chance to be on the journey to begin with.
Overall, Hot Spoon, Cold Mango set out on a goal to take the listener to new places and not be afraid to question what is in front of you. He did exactly that in a way that was fun and impressive.
