“Nothing To Do” – Jovi Skyler

Dive into the psychedelic and punk inspired record that is Jovi Skyler’s Nothing To Do. The Australian performer was inspired by his time he spent gigging abroad all over Europe. Skyler is not a stranger to releasing music, with his first self-titled album being released in early 2020. Though this is Skyler’s debut album, it allows him more room to show off his rebellious writing and larger than life instrumentals. The Sydneysider took the project from the lens of socio-cultural observations.

The opening track “If You Think So,” can be looked at as a relationship going nowhere fast. He describes a girl in a big world who feels more unique than she is. Towards the end of the song, he feels failed in the relationship singing, “falling out of this scene / don’t let them, fool you.” The song has a conversational tone and an infectious melody. The repetition of the chorus screams a fan favorite for Skyler, a live show classic. The drums are electric and one of the instruments that shines on the track, matching well with Skyler’s passionate tone.

Both “Danger Land” and “Tattoos” saw massive support from reviewers and fans. “Tattoos” stands out as a song that has a softer side to it. The brighter sound of the verse’s contrasts nicely with the cutting-edge chorus delivered. “Tattoo” lets the listen in to more of a singer-songwriter side, which plays great with the overall record.

“Never Wanted” has a hook of “never wanted, wanted, wanted love,” and a lyric like this opens the door to a lot of interpretations. Especially a social pressure to find a long-committed relationship and settle down – whether or not that is actually ideal. The LP closes with the track “Survivor.”  The anthemic track has an uplifting guitar and big vocals and drums. It perfectly concludes this thoughtful collection of songs that Skyler put together.

As a DIY artist, Skyler has been able to put out an array of videos. The singer cuts together performance clips, self-filmed vlog style clips, and even movie scenes – while putting a signature distortion and color effect on them. It is a smart way to gain recognition and continue to introduce fans to wild and bright world that is Jovi Skyler.

Overall, intention was written all over this LP. It is clear that Skyler has passion for both the writing and the music – diving into topics that most performers would stray from. As an independent artist, Skyler has the freedom to say and release exactly what he is thinking. So be sure to keep following him on his music journey.
