“Control” – Angelyse Mariah

We had the pleasure of interviewing Angelyse Mariah, and here’s what she had to say:

Q: Was there a pivotal moment in your life that set you on your path as a musician?

MARIAH: Honestly, when I look back on my life, I don’t think there has been one singular moment where I “decided”, hey maybe I should be a musician. I feel like I sound cheesy when I say this but wanting to be an entertainer was the only thing I knew as a kid.

Q: What do you like the most about writing music?

MARIAH: My favorite thing about writing music is how you can create this whole other world through a song. I love getting lost in the creative process, finding where melodies should go, what ad-libs sound cool here, what riff should I do there. When I write, my goal is to make the song sound as close to “ready-ready” as possible, I want people to be hooked in during the first 10 seconds. I look at song writing/producing and everything else that comes with making a song, like a puzzle, making sure all the pieces fit together to make one coherent body of work.

Q: What’s the story behind “Control”?

MARIAH: Control is one of those records where everything just flowed. I went to my producer with a few tracks that I liked that had latin flare and attitude, and told him I wanted to make a summer track that “you can envision the performance” in. I made the cover art for this album almost a year ago, as a mood-board for the music I wanted to start making. The next session we went to, for “Control”, the energy and the work flow for the song was so great that we had turned a session that was meant to be only 4 hours, into 12.

Q: What’s one thing you’d like listens to take with them from this song?

MARIAH: I just want listeners to have fun. “Control” is meant to be playing at party, danced to, or just blast in your car with the windows down on a nice day. I also think “Control” is one of those songs that unleashes my alter ego in a way. I feel like the baddest version of myself.

Q: Outside making music, what do you enjoy doing?

MARIAH: I feel like the only things I do outside of music is dancing and acting. If I’m not doing either of those the only places you’ll find me at is home or the gym. I’m really a home-body.

Q: Is there anything else you could see yourself doing full-time if you weren’t a musician?

MARIAH: If I’m not doing anything in the art world I have no clue what I would be doing. Sure there is probably a couple jobs that I think I might be decent at, like maybe a lawyer or magazine editor but I know for a fact that I could never do anything else, I would be completely unfulfilled.
