“Sober” – John Hugo

We had the pleasure of interviewing John Hugo, and here’s what he had to say:

Q: What does “Sober” mean to you?

HUGO: “Sober” is a song I actually wrote like three years ago during a very difficult period in my life when the relationship I was in was falling apart. Since I wrote it so long ago, the song has now become like a time capsule for what I was going through then. So now it feels like I can listen to it with a whole new perspective on things.

Q: How long have you been making music?

HUGO: I’ve been writing music for about 8 years give or take. But I just recently released my debut single “ Old School” this year.

Q: What do you enjoy the most about making music?

HUGO: I just love writing songs. It’s been a great way for me to process and deal with things over the years. Although its not always easy to make music, I love it when a song just falls from the sky and perfectly describe what I’m feeling. I think that’s what happened when I wrote “Sober”.

Q: What did you enjoy the most about creating “sober”?

HUGO: Its been a lot of fun seeing “Sober” take different shapes through the years. When I first wrote it, the song was a lot slower and actually more of a ballad. But then it kind of morphed into this synthwave inspired pop song.

Q: I love the honest and vulnerable songwriting! And the passionate delivery was awesome! Was it difficult allowing yourself to be this vulnerable with your lyrics?

HUGO: “Sober” is definitely some of the most honest song writing I’ve done so far. So yes I suppose it was difficult but also very therapeutic.

Q: Who is one artist you think has had a significant influence on your sound?

HUGO: I have so many inspirations so its hard to pick only one. But The 1975 and Harry Styles are two contemporary artists that has significantly impacted me and my music.
