We had the pleasure of interviewing KØASH, and here’s what he had to say:
Q: What was your songwriting process for “Somebody”?
KØASH: During lockdown, I was completely out of touch with people. All my social interactions were stunted and I was struggling to cope. I didn’t realise how much energy and happiness I derived from being around others. The whole theme of the song was based around this premise and our struggles as humans to say what we really feel in fear of judgement. I was suffering in silence and used the song as a vehicle to convey my feelings because they felt like a weakness to speak out loud. The melody sounded like a chant in my head which inspired the staccato style chorus.
Seeing how other people dealt with their loneliness by meeting up for casual hookups added another layer to the song. Observing these situationships culminated in making this song a commentary on the state of modern dating. I really explored how people use one another for momentary pleasure instead of seeking true love and soulmates. I attempted to write it from their perspectives and imagined myself trapped in a cycle of using and being used by somebody. I had the base draft for the melody and lyrics within an hour. I recorded it as a voice note on my phone as I do with most of my song ideas.
Q: What was your best aspect of the production process?
KØASH: My producer (Grammy Nominated, Daniel Evans) is a genius, especially when it comes to bringing my ideas to life. He really knows what works with my style of vocal and understands that less is sometimes more with pop productions. I really enjoyed seeing him layer the track with synths that complimented my top line. He really gives my vocal room to breathe whilst adding in subtle embellishments that give it that extra lift.
Q: How did you decide on the instruments? Did the tune come with the lyrics or was it something that came together in bits and pieces?
KØASH: When I pitched the idea to my producer, I told him I wanted to capture elements from 80s pop productions but blend them with a more contemporary style. This influenced everything from the heavy use of synths to even the percussion choices. The melody and lyrics came simultaneously to me during a lockdown writing session in my bedroom.
Q: What is your favourite memory from your musical journey so far?
KØASH: Honestly, it would have to be the build up to the release of this song! Acting in the music video alongside my best friend @dylanofm was so much fun! I also loved making the TikTok content I have lined up for this release. Working alongside my sister on the artwork and press release was also really fun.
Q: Outside of music, What do you enjoy doing? Is there something else you could see yourself enjoying as a career if you weren’t a musician?
KØASH: Music is my life. I have hobbies outside of music and at one point I did want to be a full time youtuber. Nowadays I cannot see myself as anything else other than a singer/songwriter.
