“Storage” – Conor Maynard

“Storage” by Conor Maynard is a moving display of pure, emotive vocal power. As the minimalistic piano and synth-based instrumentation carry a convincing chord progression, Conor pours his heart out not only vocally but lyrically. The words center around this all-encompassing, technological metaphor, comparing a relationship to its digital manifestations. All in all, we’re gifted with a clever, unique perspective on a relationship and a genuinely beautiful piece of music.

A warm piano chord fades in: “I wish I never took the time to learn the details / What I should pick up for you when you didn’t feel well / Like how you’d call when you were driving on your own / Wanted to hear me so you didn’t feel alone.” So far, the words a heartbreakingly literal. We’re let in on the pain of remembering the intricacies of someone’s personality after a breakup. To those who have experienced it, it’s grueling. To those who haven’t, it’s still an imaginable, tangible pain. Conor Maynard does a brilliant job of expressing abstract feelings with clarity.

The metaphor really blossoms in the second half of the verse and the pre-chorus. Every other phrase makes some kind of reference to a phone or a function of technology as it relates to an ex. By the time we get to the hook (“I’m all out of storage”) everything falls into place. Conor’s poignant, belted delivery breathes life into every word, and we’re left with an intense catharsis.

Be sure to give this song a stream and a download! You’ll be glad you got to know the powerful talent of Conor Maynard.
