“Messy” by Antigoni and Zion Foster is a sultry display of pop production and vocal prowess. If this song doesn’t make you feel sensual or cool, you’re doing it wrong. With two incredibly talented singers and a collection of effective chords, it paints a picture of a desire-driven yet secretive relationship. Via many tricks and techniques, “Messy” keeps you invested, interested, and most importantly, entertained.
A covered set of plucked guitar chords kicks the song off. “I like your spice / Wait ‘til I get you on your own / Creepin’ at night / Meet me when nobody’s home,” the vocalist croons a low-register, warm melody. The chorus arrives quickly, characterized by reverb-drenched background vocals and a memorable melody. It begins percussively broken down, but halfway through, erupts back into a thick, in-the-pocket groove.
The second verse sports a second vocalist, this time spitting syllabic, quick phrases. Although different in atmosphere from the first verse, this style of singing is equally as impressive. The speedy, raspy ambiance is actually a nice juxtaposition, keeping the arc familiar and new all at once. Ultimately, it culminates in the same, wonderfully catchy chorus.
The outro serves us a cloud of ad-libbed versions of the hook, then suddenly dissolves with a final, “yeah.” Antigoni and Zion Foster both imbued this track with a fire and passion only they could provide. “Messy” deserves not only praise but success as a veritable pop masterpiece. Be sure to like, download, and stream it! Plus, it couldn’t hurt to give both artists a quick follow.
