“how it started” by AIYANA

If you tend to reflect on past relationships; analyzing how they started, the good memories, and what went wrong, “how it started” by Sussex-based artist, AIYANA might just be the song you’ve been looking for. We had the pleasure of interviewing AIYANA, and here’s what she had to say:

Q: I like how expressive and vulnerable the lyrics of “how it started” are! What was your inspiration for this song?

AIYANA: At the time I was living in this tiny house for uni with my best friend who was breaking up with her long-distance boyfriend and over Mario Kart and BAD wine she would always tell me the reasons for it but remembers the way it started and that’s when we came up with the concept!!

Q: Can you describe your vocal routine and typical studio session while creating this song?

AIYANA: I wrote the song over facetime in 2021 with a friend from Nashville and then brought it to life later that year with another producer. I remember working on it for the first day and we both were super super excited about it. We started with piano and vocals and then built around that. I fully fell in love with what we did and was there until 10pm. I had the bestest day working on it.

Q: What effect would you like your music to have on listeners?

AIYANA: I suppose I just want people to feel like they’re not alone in what they are going through because it’s super easy to feel that way sometimes I find hehe.

Q: If you could perform at any venue in the world, what would it be?

AIYANA: I don’t know if this counts as a venue but I would love to play a festival like Boardmasters one day !!

Q: What projects are currently in the works?

AIYANA: So so much new music !! I have been working with some super-talented humans/friends and I think it’s some of the most honest writing I’ve done!! Cannot wait for people to hear it !!

Q: Do you have any advice for aspiring musicians?

AIYANA: I think just be kind, and surround yourself with really really lovely people that you trust because it’s a weird and hard industry, and having that support is the bestest ever.
