“Fake Love” by James Hersey

Q: I think the lyrics for “Fake Love” are interesting, and many people can relate! What’s the inspiration behind it?

HERSEY: I wrote the song about a girl I fell for on a wild night on tour. We got together as much as we could after that, but neither of us realized that our realities were too different to make it work, and we broke each other’s hearts.

Q: What was your favorite moment in making the music video for “Fake Love”?

HERSEY: I loved having the band with me in the video, I’m so used to just being alone in videos, so it really took the pressure off. Also standing in ridiculous spots with the pizza box was fun and looks cool as hell.

Q: What got you into music?

HERSEY: My dad played guitar at home, and he got me my first recording equipment. Later my inspirations were older punk bands at my school. When I saw them live I knew what I wanted to do.

Q: I see you’ve performed at Bonnaroo, Coachella, Lollapalooza, SXSW, etc. So far, what has been your favorite performance and why?

HERSEY: Even though it wasn’t the biggest show of those I really loved playing Bonnaroo. The others were guest appearances, but at Bonnaroo there were a few thousand people who showed up just to see my show, that was dope.

Q:  If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing?

HERSEY: I’d probably be teaching or doing social work, like my brother. We’re really good with kids, I think cause we had and still have very cool parents.

Q: Is there anything you’d like to say to your fans?

HERSEY:  I hope that everyone can appreciate the direction I’m taking on this record. There are a lot of expectations when you’ve had success, so it’s not easy breaking with those. Thank you for having open hearts and ears, it means a lot to me.
