“Run” – Emmrose

Every era has put its unique stamp on music. In the ‘90s you couldn’t get far without hearing an epic love song, the ‘00s gave way to emo and today? Well, there’s no one set way to be because genre lines have been blurred but lyrically? Artists aren’t writing to be sugary sweet anymore. Many artists aren’t here to be your picture-perfect pop stars like once upon a time. They’re raw and deliver lyrics that come through with straightforward lyricism. Artists from Grammy-winners like Billie Eilish to indie favorites such as Emmrose are coming through with blunt honesty. It’s what made Emmrose one to watch in 2020 with the release of her debut album, and she’s continuing on that path with her latest, “Run.”

That’s not to say there aren’t songs spun out of fairy tales still out there, but it’s clear “Run” isn’t one of them as this indie-pop delivers a toxic tale with heavy drum beats throughout. Lyrically, the story is one that many will be able to see themselves in. Those situations where you’re partnered up with someone who has proven to be less than, and you have to find a way to get as far away as possible from them. Emmrose says she penned this to put the power in the hands of those who may not know how to walk, or rather run, away from the toxicity. Here’s to hoping it becomes the musical push those in need of this courage.

Aside from the narrative “Run” gives, the arrangement is also something to celebrate. Working alongside producer Mike Abiuso, this song was made for live performances. Those who find themselves in venues more often than not will be able to envision the stage as Emmrose does this one live. The beats, the experimental way she brings forth every line – concertgoers will breathe heavily just thinking about it. Which, those attending the New Colossus Festival in March 2022 will be able to see as Emmrose will be performing there alongside Nicole Yun, A Very Special Episode, Wetsuit, and many more.

Emmrose got her start in, of all places, math class. That’s where she wrote her first song at 14. Since then she’s released a myriad of singles, moved to New York City, and found herself in college. She’s currently balancing school with recording a new, highly anticipated EP. It’ll be the follow-up to 2020’s ‘Hopeless Romantics.’
