Tadhg Daly truly knows how to make a native Californian feel homesick when there’s snow outside her window. One listen to “Winter in LA” and I was stuck in a cycle of daydreams about my former home near the coastal sands. Alas, while the song made me yearn for the sun, it also had this hopeful narrative that’s worth exploring.
It’s human nature to romanticize places you’ve yet to invest your time in. Anywhere but home seems great in a dream, but back in reality, a locale change may not always solve the root of one’s issues. Tadhg Daly explores that packed suitcase, heading for a better life, fantasy of hope in “Winter in LA.” Upset elsewhere, this Jersey-born singer-songwriter channeled all those emotions into this well-crafted song that has the heart of Jason Mraz, but an elevated delivery with more bravado that would do well alongside the likes of Sam Thompkins and Ed Sheeran on the radio.
While Tadhg Daly’s voice and the arrangement of the music are more than enough to make you stick around and hit “repeat” on “Winter in LA,” I do think it’s that hopeful spirit laced in between every line of this song that is going to make it a fan favorite for those who’ve been tuned into Daly before this, and those who are just hearing him for the first time. The latter being those who have yet to engulf themselves in someone both Amazon Music and BBC Introducing have called an “artist to watch” due to his impressive releases thus far including 2021’s ‘Forever Young’ EP.
