Mikey Wayne released his new track “Lovin’ & Leavin'” today, April 18, 2025.
“Lovin’ & Leavin'” is a heartfelt modern country folk track with pop influences that captures catchy harmonies, a full-band sound that utilizes electric elements, and on-point storytelling. The mesh of guitars, drums, synths, and bass gives a fullness to the sound. The instrumentation flows well with the vocals, and the fingerpicking that starts around 02:05 hits with stunning intricacy. The vocals belt out the notes with force and feeling. Speaking of feeling, the sound and lyrics tell a story that blends heartfelt feeling with a heartbreaking story.
Lyrically, “Lovin’ & Leavin'” explores love, but in a way that’s fleeting. It explores wanting to connect with another but not allowing the self to because of the knowledge that things won’t be forever. The chorus starts with, “So I don’t wanna kiss you / I saw all the warning signs / I know I’m gonna miss you.” Though the narrative gets into a want for love, it also gets into a hesitation. Overall, it does well at capturing these feelings in a real in relatable way.
