“30” – Zach Hood

“30” by Zach Hood puts the emotional elements of pop music on full display. With its unique perspective on mental health, this song pinpoints a feeling far too many people felt and struggled to express—It can feel so hard to imagine a good future when the present seems dismal. But, having hope is the only way out. Zach Hood’s organic vocals, sentimental acoustic guitar, and vibrant harmonies make up a touching, poignant piece of music. Plus, it manages to be wonderfully infectious at the same time.

A simple set of chords starts the song off. “Today my mother asked if I’m depressed and I got stressed / ‘Cause I don’t want her to worry,” Zach croons, the acoustic guitar sliding from note to note effortlessly underneath. A transitional set of reverb-drenched runs takes us to another verse. That same run returns, but this time as a backdrop to the chorus: “I hope they see me at thirty.” The hook strikes this recognizable pain into the heart of the listener. Wrapping up all the exposition with a simple yet arresting line like this is a sure sign of a brilliant songwriter. Zach Hood uses his voice and musicality in an effective and meaningful way to bring us music that feels authentic.

Be sure to give “30” a stream on your favorite streaming service, and Zach Hood a follow on your choice of social media platform. You’ll find that his discography mirrors this song in its wealth of poignancy. Before long, you’ll be a lifelong fan.
